UCLA’s "Taiwan in Dialogue” Lecture/Dialogue Series Launch the First Event “Reading ‘The Story of the Stone’ with Pai Hsien-Yung and Susan Chan Egan”

With the support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles partners with UCLA’s Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) on the Spotlight Taiwan Project this year, featuring “Taiwan in Dialogue” lecture/dialogue series online. The first event, “Reading The Story of the Stone with Pai Hsien-Yung and Susan Chan Egan,” will be held at 8:00 pm PST on Feb. 26, 2021. The well-known writer Pai Hsien-Yung and independent scholar Susan Chan Egan will be invited in dialogue with Michael Berry, Director of CCS, to discuss the history and the lasting cultural impact of the Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber  (also called The Story of the Stone). Join and discover the exquisite virtual tour of “Treasures in Gold & Jade: Masterworks from Taiwan”

Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles, partnering with Bowers Museum, will present "Treasures in Gold & Jade: Masterworks from Taiwan". This exhibition showcases 44 elegant gold and jade works by Taiwanese artists Wu Ching and Huang Fu-Shou. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition has not been open to the general public. Hence, Bowers Museum is presenting virtual tours of this exhibition to show the artists and their works. Dates for virtual tours are on Feb. 21 and Feb. 28.

2021 LunarFest Builds Family Bonds Through Lanterns and Hot Pot Dinners

2021 LunarFest, themed “Family is Everything!”, brings a series of physical and virtual programming from Feb. 11 to Mar. 7. “The Lantern City - Family Ties” presents eight lanterns with designs from two remarkable indigenous art families, Artist Susan Point of Canada and Sakuliu Pavavalung of Taiwan, at Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza from Feb. 11 to Feb. 23. Additionally, a virtual hot pot dinner program “Melting Pot, I Think Not!” invites friends from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan to talk about their food traditions. LunarFest also features a video of a new book, The Untold Story of Shacha Sauceexplaining how Shacha sauce originated from Malacca in Malaysia and became popular in Taiwan. The Taiwanese film “A Sun” Entered into the Shortlist of Best International Feature Film for the 93rd Academy Awards

The Taiwanese film “A Sun,” directed by Chung Mong-Hong, entered into the shortlist of Best International Feature Film for the 93rd Academy Awards, which consists of 15 titles determined from 93 eligible entries. This marks the second time Taiwan’s selection enters for shortlist in this category since “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale” earned the shortlist spot for the best foreign-language film in 2012. The film, being highly acclaimed by critics and shortlisted within 15 titles, demonstrates its potential for nomination and to win the award. The nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be revealed on Mar. 15, 2021. The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Apr. 25, 2021. For more information, please visit Taiwan Academy
