B.DANCE “Rage” On-line Program at Fundación CorpArtes in Chile

B.DANCE, founded in 2014 and led by the young Taiwanese choreographer Po-Cheng Tsai, is one of the emerging contemporary dance companies in Taiwan. The creation of the production “Rage,” premiered in 2018, was influenced and touched by some social events in Taiwan. Fundación CorpArtes in Chile is going to present the program “Rage” online from April 5th to 30th (Ticket Price US$4, Available only for Latin American countries). Besides, there will be an Open Talk with choreographer Po-Cheng Tsai on April 8th at 4:00 PM PST (7:00 PM Chilean Time), free for worldwide audiences via Zoom.

Taiwan Cinema at the 47th Seattle International Film Festival

With the support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will launch Taiwan Cinema at the 47th Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) from April 8th to 18th, 2021. Four Taiwanese films will be presented, including “My Missing Valentine,” a fantasy comedy drama that scooped the top prize at the 57th Golden Horse Awards; “Final Exam” that reflects the education crisis provoked by declining birth rates in Taiwan; the martial arts infused zombie satire comedy “Get The Hell Out;” and “The Teacher,” a story about the limits of acceptance of LGBTQ people as Taiwan became the first in Asia to pass a marriage-equality law in May 2019.

Webinars with WAA: “THE NEXT STAGE: Essential Issues in Performing Arts Creation, Presentation, and Engagement”

Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles and Western Arts Alliance (WAA) are collaborating to produce a series of six webinars titled as “THE NEXT STAGE: Essential Issues in Performing Arts Creation, Presentation, and Engagement”! The programs focus on critical issues facing the performing arts amidst the pandemic and its recovery. Some of the most creative artists and arts leaders in the United States and Taiwan will gather to share their insightful views about how to face this global crisis. The first event will take place on April 21st.

LACMA's Sundays Live Kicks Off New Virtual Season with Concert of National Symphony Orchestra from Taiwan

LACMA's (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) Sundays Live is the longest-running live music broadcast in Los Angeles. It presents weekly classical chamber music concerts and recitals by premier professional artists from Southern California and around the world. 2021 new virtual season premiere will present the concert by National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan Philharmonic) conducted by Shao-Chia Lüon on April 25th (tentative) ! There will be 4 works by Taiwanese composers presented: “The Angle from Formosa” and “Bang Chhun Hong” by Tyzen Hsiao, “Song of Reverberant Emerald” by Ching-Mei Lin and “Hakka Fantasy” by I-Uen Wang Hwang. This free program will begin at 6:00 PM PST and stream on LACMA's YouTube channel.

“After Hope” Exhibition Opens in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco

With the support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles is collaborating with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco to present “After Hope: Videos of Resistance” from now until December 2021. This exhibition showcases over 50 video works by Asian artists at the Lee Gallery, the museum's main exhibition space. There are three Taiwanese artists and their video works included, Isa Ho's "Peony", Guang-Ming Yuan’s "The 561st Hour of Occupation" and Kuang-Yu Tsui’s "Stay Calm".

“Treasures in Gold & Jade: Masterworks from Taiwan” opens at the Bowers Museum

"Treasures in Gold & Jade: Masterworks from Taiwan", co-presented by the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles and the Bowers Museum, is now open to the public from March 17th to September 5th, 2021. This exhibition showcases 44 elegant gold and jade artworks by Taiwanese artists Wu Ching and Huang Fu-Shou. Twenty-seven carvings by Huang Fu-Shou show a surprising range of jade's colors: from emerald green to an almost pearlescent white. Seventeen poetic sculptures by Wu Ching capture the majesty of gold, breathing form into questions on the nature of being. These two masters have been working in their respective fields of art for nearly half a century, and their ingenious techniques have transformed jade and gold into a rare treasure.

The Retrospective of Taiwanese Director Tsai Ming-liang in 2021 FICUNAM, Mexico

With the support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles co-presents “The Retrospective of Tsai Ming-liang” with FICUNAM, the International Film Festival of the National Autonomous University of México, at its 11th edition. The retrospective will present sixteen of Taiwanese Director Tsai’s films, including his latest work “Days” and award-winning works from March 18th to 24th via MUBI, as well as a Master Class and a Workshop on March 25th and 26th. Moreover, a monographic publication that covers different aspects of Director Tsai’s works from the perception of six notable filmmakers / film critics / programmers of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will be published both in English and Spanish. Following the retrospective dedicated to the Taiwanese director Edward Yang in 2013, this is the second time FICUNAM showcasing works of Taiwan’s influential director to foster further appreciation and understanding of Taiwan’s outstanding film art works.
