16 Taiwanese Performing Arts Groups & Webinar “International Collaboration in a Global Pandemic” Featured at 2021 Western Arts Alliance Annual Conference

Established in 1967, Western Arts Alliance (WAA) is a membership association with performing arts professionals throughout the Western United States. 2021 WAA Annual Conference will take place from August 30th to September 2nd. The conference will hold a workshop entitled “International Collaboration in a Global Pandemic” at 10:15 AM PDT on September 2nd. It is also the 4th webinar of “THE NEXT STAGE” series that WAA partners with Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles. This workshop will invite Kuen-Yean Hwang (Senior Member of Ju Percussion) and Austin Wang (Director of Taipei Performing Arts Center) with moderator Cindy Hwang (Founder & President, Impulse Creatives) and three other speakers including Alicia Adams (Vice President of International Programming, The Kennedy Center), Hone Kouka (Artistic Director of Kia Mau Festival), and Fabiola Pazmiño (Chief Academic Officer of Galapagos Music Conference).  Moreover, the virtual booth of Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will feature “Story Island” with 16 Taiwanese performing arts groups. The on-line Independent Showcase presents 15 minutes performance of “Floating Flowers” by Taiwanese dance troupe B.DANCE.

“Divine Immersion: The Experiential Art of Nick Dong” at the USC Pacific Asia Museum

"Divine Immersion: The Experiential Art of Nick Dong," co-presented by the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles and the USC Pacific Asia Museum from now until October 3rd, features six works by Taiwanese artist Nick Dong. By illuminating our broken and dark places, Dong hopes to create hope and healing opportunities for the visitors through the exhibition. Heaven (above left) is a one-person-at-a-time interactive installation that welcomes all to experience the state of light and serenity. Visitors can also smell the incense that Dong uses to purify the space. And more, the specially created light creates an angelic halo effect, which flows with the light and music to rejuvenate the visitor's mind. Immersion (above right) is a large suspended sound installation consisting of 42 hand-made singing bowls/meditation bowls. Visitors can sit in different positions and experience the sound and vibrations. Unlike visual stimulation, this work leads visitors to immerse themselves in the music of the singing bowl, repeating the process again and again in search for peace of mind. Taiwanese Artist Jennifer Chia-ling Ho’s Solo Exhibition “How Are You?” Featured at the 18th Street Arts Center

Jennifer Chia-ling Ho’s solo exhibition “How Are You?” takes place at the 18th Street Arts Center from August 16th to September 24th, 2021. Ho’s works explore the sense of belonging, nationality, and the complex and sometimes conflicted experience of Asian immigrants in the American discussion of racial identity. The newest work “Check the Box” is an installation of five plaster sculptures–representing i, u, y, ə, and a, the five vowel-like sounds used in Mandarin Chinese –combined with mesh wire and file cabinets.  Ho will host an artist conversation, “Repeat After Me,” with guests including Taiwanese artist Tzu-Huan Lin and two Los Angeles-based artists, Dan S.
