Supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, the acclaimed Taiwanese contemporary dance company Hung Dance embarks on its Birdy 2025 North America Tour this November and December, with ten performances across seven cities in the United States and Canada — including Port Angeles (WA), Denver (CO), Scottsdale (AZ), Houston (TX), Dallas (TX), Vancouver (BC), and Victoria (BC).
Presented in collaboration with the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles, the tour showcases the freedom, vitality, and creativity of Taiwan’s contemporary dance through a powerful blend of Eastern movement vocabulary and modern sensibility.
Founded in 2017 by choreographer Hung-Chung Lai, Hung Dance is known for its signature aesthetic that fuses elements of traditional Chinese opera and Tai Chi imagery with contemporary dance. Birdy, the company’s signature work, takes the tension between the desire to fly and the pull of gravity as its creative starting point—symbolizing the human pursuit of freedom amid the constraints of reality.
“As a young artist eight years ago, I set out internationally with three plane tickets; this year, we’re traveling with fourteen,” said Artistic Director Hung-Chung Lai. “It marks a transformation from individual flight to collective soaring—a testament to the growth of Taiwanese contemporary dance on the world stage.”
After its U.S. debut at the American Dance Festival (ADF) in 2024, Birdy drew strong acclaim from curators and critics alike for its precision, fluidity, and poetic intensity. This North America tour continues that energy, reaffirming Taiwan’s dynamic presence in the global performing arts scene.
The Birdy North America Tour marks a new milestone for Taiwan’s performing arts abroad. The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will continue to work with arts festivals and performance centers across North America to bring more outstanding Taiwanese artists to the international stage.
