With the support of Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles is pleased to support Paiwan singer-songwriter Sauljaljui’s Greater Vancouver performances as part of her first North American tour in July 2026. She will appear at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Beyond the Void: Taiwan-Canada Cross-Cultural Arts Festival, and the Mission Folk Music Festival, sharing the contemporary vitality of Taiwan’s Indigenous music with audiences in Canada.
Hailing from a Paiwan community in Pingtung, southern Taiwan, Sauljaljui draws from traditional Indigenous songs, Hengchun folk music, and the yueqin(moon lute), blending these roots with elements of world music to create a distinctive and powerful sound. Her album VAIVAIK received major recognition at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards, including Best Indigenous Language Album and Best Arrangement, further affirming her role as one of Taiwan’s leading Indigenous voices on the international stage.
The Greater Vancouver performances form an important part of Sauljaljui’s first North American tour. On July 17 and 18, she will perform at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival at Jericho Beach Park, joining artists and audiences from around the world. On July 23, she will take part in Beyond the Void: Taiwan-Canada Cross-Cultural Arts Festival at Theatre at UBC, creating a space for dialogue between Taiwan’s Indigenous music and Canada’s diverse arts communities. She will then continue to the Mission Folk Music Festival on July 25 and 26, further connecting Taiwan and Canada’s West Coast through music.
“VAIVAIK” comes from the Paiwan language and carries the meaning of searching, walking, and moving forward. This tour continues the spirit of Sauljaljui’s award-winning album VAIVAIK, presenting music as a way of journeying across borders, exploring cultural memory, and opening conversations between communities. Through her music, Sauljaljui brings the sounds, stories, and cultural depth of southern Taiwan to international audiences.
Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles notes that the Greater Vancouver performances bring together major music festivals, a university theatre, and cross-cultural arts programming. The tour not only raises the visibility of Taiwan’s Indigenous music in Canada, but also deepens cultural connections between Taiwan and North American festivals, venues, and arts organizations. Taiwan Academy will continue to support Taiwanese artists in reaching international platforms and sharing the diversity and creativity of Taiwan’s contemporary culture.
