With the support of Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles is partnering with the International Documentary Association (IDA) to present Taiwan Docs in Motion at Getting Real ’26, taking place in Los Angeles from July 20 to 23, 2026. The special program features two industry panels, a documentary screening and post-screening discussion, and a Taiwan presence at the Industry Expo, introducing international documentary professionals to Taiwan’s diverse creative voices, industry platforms, and potential for cross-border collaboration.
Organized by IDA, Getting Real is a major gathering for the international documentary community, bringing together filmmakers, producers, festival programmers, distributors, and representatives from cultural organizations to exchange ideas on documentary creation, production, distribution, and social impact. Held this year in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, the conference marks Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles’ first participation with a comprehensive Taiwan-focused program. Representatives from CNEX, Giloo Documentary Video, and Taiwan’s documentary community will share Taiwan’s experience in industry development, international co-production, distribution, and audience engagement, highlighting the country’s potential to connect documentary communities across Asia and the global market.
The program includes two 75-minute industry panels. Beyond Festivals and Streamers: How Films Find Audiences, Unlock Value, and Drive Impact will feature the Giloo team, while From Island to Hub: Taiwan’s Evolving Documentary Ecosystem and the Making of an Asian Documentary Catalyst will bring together representatives from CNEX and the CNEX Chinese Documentary Forum (CCDF). The two discussions will address audience development, the extension of a film’s value and impact, international pitching, talent development, and cross-border collaboration. Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will also host a Taiwan booth at the Industry Expo to introduce Taiwanese documentary works, industry platforms, and partnership opportunities. Both panels and the Industry Expo are part of the official Getting Real ’26 conference program and require conference credentials.
The special screening, The Grey Between: Island in Between + Colour Ideology Sampling.mov, will take place on the evening of July 21 at 2220 Arts + Archives in Los Angeles. The program features two internationally acclaimed Taiwanese documentary shorts: Island in Between, directed by S. Leo Chiang and nominated for Best Documentary Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards; and Colour Ideology Sampling.mov, directed by Chan Cheuk-sze and Kathy Wong, winner of Best Documentary Short Film at the 61st Golden Horse Awards and the Taiwan Competition Jury Prize at the 2026 Taiwan International Documentary Festival. The screening is free and open to the public with advance registration, and will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers.
Drawing from the director’s personal experience, Island in Between portrays Kinmen, an island situated between Taiwan and China, where historical memory, the legacy of military conflict, and contemporary life intersect. Colour Ideology Sampling.mov begins with the different political associations attached to colors in Taiwan and Hong Kong, combining visual research, personal experience, and public discussion to examine the political, cultural, and ideological meanings embedded in color. Through distinct cinematic approaches, the two films explore the visible and invisible boundaries shaped by geography, history, and politics, inviting audiences to reconsider the relationships among identity, collective memory, and ways of seeing.
Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles notes that the program will bring Taiwan’s documentary perspectives and industry experience directly into the U.S. documentary community. In addition to raising the international visibility of Taiwanese documentaries, it will deepen connections among Taiwanese filmmakers, international festivals, distributors, production platforms, and documentary organizations. Taiwan Academy will continue to support Taiwanese moving-image artists in participating in major international platforms and sharing the freedom, diversity, and creative vitality of Taiwan’s contemporary culture.
