Chang Sheng's Manga “Oldman” Selected for the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival

  • Date:2022-05-20

The Vancouver Comic Arts Festival (VanCAF) is the annual celebration of comics and graphic novels. This year, VanCAF 2022 will kick off from May 16 to May 22 with online and in-person events. Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles joins VanCAF with Chang Sheng's fantasy comics Oldman, which will be presented online, featuring the mysterious story and its creation process. All are welcome to follow the official website of VanCAF to enjoy the charisma of Taiwanese comics in Vancouver.

The story of “Oldman” is set in the 17th century, as a beautiful queen rules her country with an iron fist. Unmarried and without an heir, she adopts orphans as a way to prove that even commoners can reign as kings. Yet, as the years progress, she shows no sign of aging. Only one man knows the dark secret to her eternal youth: Oldman, a bearded magician the queen has locked in her darkest dungeon. One night, Oldman steps through the bars of his prison and disappears before the queen's very eyes. Enraged, she sends her army after him in a desperate campaign to keep her secret hidden.

Having read comics from a young age, Chang Sheng has always preferred science fiction stories best. He admits to being deeply influenced by the work of Yukinobu Hoshino. His drawing style is exquisitely detailed and extremely realistic video game-like. Chang Sheng has represented Taiwan at the Angoulême International Comics Festival many times and has won several prizes overseas. Oldman was a finalist in the 2013 International Manga Award in Japan.

Oldman has been translated into Japanese, Korean, and French, and is now being translated into English. The beautiful artwork and elegant story-making of Chang-Sheng's Oldman are ready for the global audience it deserves.
VanCAF is an annual celebration of comics and graphic novels and their creators, including an exhibition and vendor fair featuring hundreds of creators from around the world. Other Festival events include readings, panels and workshops. For more information, please visit: https://www.vancaf.org/
