To promote modern Taiwanese literature to readers in California, the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles and the Los Angeles City College will co-host a series of literary salons, starting off a lecture led by female writer Chung Wen-yin (鍾文音) on Sept. 24.
With extensive writing background in vocations such as cinema critic, newspaper reporter, essayist, and photographer, Chung is admired as one of Taiwan's leading professional writers. The 45-year-old Tamkang graduate has been awarded more than ten literary prizes, including the 2003 Yunlin County Cultural Award and the Wu San-Lien Literature Prize in 2005; the latter is considered the most important literary prize in Taiwan.
Her literary works include two short stories collections — "Two People in One Day” (一天兩個人) and "The Past” (過去) — and the novels "Woman Islands” (女島紀行), "Over the Left Bank of River” (在河左岸), "Departing Love” (愛別離), and "Merciful Lover” (慈悲情人). Her latest release is the "Island Trilogy,”comprising "Decayed Lust” (豔歌行), "Decayed Land” (短歌行), and "Decayed Life” (傷歌行).
Those who wish to meet with the author, who is currently serving her residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico, can attend her lecture titled "Translations of Land & Gratitude: Writing from My Island” at the Los Angeles City College on Sept. 24.
