As part of the Ministry's Spotlight Taiwan global initiative, the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) of the University of British Columbia will kick off a series of Taiwan-centered events starting this fall semester.
The MOA will begin its foray into Taiwanese culture with the famed Pili Puppetry, a subset of glove puppetry that has adapted the traditional "poor man's entertainment” for television. Using spectacular special effects, elaborate costumes, and nimble coordination, Pili handlers will be featured in the "Come Play With Us” program on Aug. 27.
Come November, the Taiyuan Puppet Theatre and the Chin Fei Feng Marionette Theatre Troupe will offer puppetry workshops, school shows, and public performances at the MOA's Michael Ames Theatre.
Their performances will be accompanied by hands-on art activities such as decorative painting of glove puppets, a Taiwanese cuisine tasting event, and collaboration with local Canadian artists.
