The 23rd San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) will run from November 3 to November 12, 2022. For the eleventh consecutive year, the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA) has collaborated with SDAFF to present the “Taiwan Film Showcase.” It features screenings of five feature films and five short films at the UCSD Price Center Theater and UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas, showcasing the breadth of Taiwan's artistic vision to the American public.
"Mama Boy," a movie depicting an innocent boy's search for love and self-worth in a parent-child connection and in the real world, was released in August to rousing acclaim in Taiwan. The in-person Q&A discussion with the film director Arvin Chen will follow the film screening. The film "Gaga," which has received six Golden Horse Award nominations, illustrates contradictions in both modern civilization and customary Aboriginal ways. The documentary "Remember Me," bears witness to the subtle political shift in Taiwan and China over the past few decades. In addition, a new restoration film section will be introduced, featuring "A Confucian Confusion," directed by Edward Yang, which presents the aspirations and situations of love, friendship, and self-identity of young people in Taiwan society; the film "Girl's School" depicts the subversive interaction between schoolgirls in Taiwan in the 1980s. The short film program presents the director Tsai Ming-liang’s new film "The Moon and the Tree,” the best short film at the Taipei Film Festival "Good Day,” and the 2022 Rotterdam Film Festival nomination “The Making of Crime Scenes,” as well as “Sappukei” and “Bigger is Better."
Founded in 2000, SDAFF is the best international film festival in the United States that focuses on Asian Americans. This year’s SDAFF will feature more than 130 films from more than 30 countries. The Taiwanese films showcased will thoroughly reflect the complexity and depth of Taiwanese culture by addressing a range of topics including love, social issues, gender, and identity.
