Slamdance Joshua Tree Opens with Taiwanese Film Taipei Suicide Story and There

Slamdance Joshua Tree, to be held from September 24th to 26th, is an outdoor screening event featuring award-winning and audience-favorite films from the 2021 Slamdance Film Festival. The three-day event will be held at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, located at 59700 Twentynine Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, CA 92252, and will present the festival’s opening night screening of Taipei Suicide Story and There on September 24th, followed by a Q&A with the director KEFF. Taiwanese Artists Invited to “ART RENZEI + POW!WOW! Long Beach”

Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles and Creative Class Collective jointly present "ART RENZEI + POW! WOW! Long Beach" from September 28th, 2021. The festival invited Taiwanese multimedia artist Wan-Jen Chen to feature Midnight Blue at Long Beach City Hall until November 5, 2021, and Tang-Wei Hsu to participate in the POW!WOW! Long Beach's mural creation until October 5th, 2021.  Wan-Jen Chen redesigned Midnight Blue in conjunction with the giant LED screen at Long Beach City Hall. The images of swimmers in the video were taken during his long observation of Taiwan's waterfront. Some swimmers wear professional attire, while others mix their personalities. The long swimming lane seems to be a catwalk, and the models and designers are all the people who live in the real world. He created an infinite loop of these repetitive and habitual actions as a never-ending role on the waterways. Tang Wei Hsu's mural The Native Island of Robots metaphorically represents buildings as abstract carriers, whether they are urban or condominium units, containing people and things of different cultural backgrounds. Especially in Long Beach, there are various ethnic fusion spaces, and each unique architectural style house is filled with diverse and unknown stories. In Hsu's on-site work, he uses black contour lines to bring his unique mechanical painting vocabulary, as if he has equipped the house with a motor and a time machine, ready to make the house active. Taiwanese Artist Shu Lea Cheang’s “UKI Virus Rising” Featured in exhibition " Witch Hunt " at the Hammer Museum

The exhibition “Witch Hunt” will take place at the Hammer Museum from October 10th 2021 to January 9th 2022. Organized by the Hammer Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA), this exhibition presents 15 works of women artists from 13 countries, who use feminist, queer, and decolonial strategies to investigate current and historical political events, social conditions, and overlooked or suppressed artistic legacies. Taiwanese-American artist Shu Lea Cheang will display her installation “UKI Virus Rising”. This three-channel video installation was firstly presented in Gwangju Biennale 2018. The virus is the exploratory subject of Shu Lea Cheang’s works since the 2000s. As a source of contagion, the virus is associated with invasion and also inscribed with the potentiality to propagate, mobilize, and resist. Submission for the 2022 ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship: Literature from Taiwan is Open!

American Literary Translators Association(ALTA) is an organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to literary translation. This year, ALTA partners with the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles to launch the 2022 ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship: Literature from Taiwan. The selected Taiwanese emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed during the nine-month mentorship with his/her mentor, and at the conclusion of the mentorship period, the mentee and mentor present their work at the annual ALTA conference in fall of 2022.
