San Diego Asian Film Festival Taiwan Film Showcase Lineup Revealed |
|
The 25th San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF), the best international film festival in the United States that focuses on Asian Americans, will kick off from November 7 to 18. The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA) is thrilled to collaborate with SDAFF to present “Taiwan Film Showcase.”
The lineup includes the comic terror “Dead Talent’s Society,” directed by John Hsu, a box office hit in Taiwan, depicting a horror comedy movie with the theme of urban legends. It tells the story of ghosts who strive to develop their acting careers in the underworld and aspire to become superstars in the spiritual world. A Taiwan, Singapore, and Poland co-production, "Pierce," is Nelicia Low's directorial debut following two recently reunited Taiwanese fencing-enthusiast brothers whose mesh masks conceal as much as they protect. “Mahjong,” a classic directed by Edward Yang, deftly reveals the conflict across generations and hierarchy in society. “Abiding Nowhere” is the tenth film in Tsai Ming-liang’s Walker series and features his long-time collaborator Lee Kang-Sheng as the character inspired by a Tang Dynasty monk who in the 6th century traveled on foot to bring Buddhist teachings from China to India. “Light of the Setting Sun” is Taiwanese-American Vicky Du’s self-exploration of her family’s silence around the cycles of violence that have persisted since the Chinese Communist Revolution of 1949.” Among the shorts are “Tayal Forest Club,” “The Stag," "Bird-Window Collisions,” and "The Horse.” And more Taiwanese shorts spread throughout different programs are “Is this now the time I should let you go?" “The Horse,” “Euphoria,” "Limbo,” “Hey Day, “and “Watercolor Piggie.”

Watch“Huang Yi & KUKA” at PRAx and Warren Miller Performing Arts Center |
|
Supported by Ministry of Culture of Taiwan (Republic of China), "Huang Yi & Kuka" by Huang Yi Studio will be performed at California Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, and Warren Miller Performing Arts Center in October 2024.
“Huang Yi & KUKA” is a piece where humans and robots dance poetically, and converse tenderly. Throughout the rhythms and exchanged gazes between the dancer and KUKA, human behaviors have become mechanical and rigid, while KUKA has turned ingenious like a human. With Huang Yi’s elaborate design, robots, under the condition of inability to improvise, can interact with dancers, and through interaction, express heartwarming affections. “Huang Yi & KUKA” is not just a product that integrates arts and technology. Moreover, it allows the audience to reexamine the relationship between “humans” and “tools.” Don’t miss the last two shows at Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts and Warren Miller Performing Arts Center.
