Small Island Big Song Kicks Off 2024 US Tour

Small Island Big Song is a music, film and performing arts project uniting the islands of the Pacific and Indian Ocean through artistic collaboration, a contemporary and relevant musical statement from a region that shares an ancient seafaring heritage and the impact of our changing sea. The performance ‘Our Island’ brings together some of the most prominent artists of Taiwan, Madagascar, Mauritius, Papua New Guinea, and Tahiti, who have made a choice to maintain the cultural voice of their people, to sing in the language, and to play the instruments of their land. Taiwanese Artist Lee Mingwei’s “Rituals of Care” Recommended by ArtAsiaPacific as a Must-See Exhibition for 2024!

Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles and the De Young Museum in San Francisco are delighted to co-present the "Rituals of Care" exhibition, scheduled to run from February 17 to July 7, 2024. This compelling showcase highlights the warm and distinctive relational aesthetics of the globally acclaimed artist, Lee Mingwei. Anticipated as a rare visual delight for art enthusiasts in the Bay Area, the exhibition extends a heartfelt invitation to the audience to immerse themselves in the profound beauty of art and interpersonal connections.

Lee Mingwei skillfully guides the audience to participate in and engage in dialogue through his artworks, fostering an atmosphere of trust, self-awareness, repair, and commemoration. Concurrently, the exhibition delves into various relationship patterns. The curated collection features six globally cherished classic works from recent years, including "100 Days with Lily," "The Mending Project," "The Letter Writing Project," "Our Peaceable Kingdom," "Guernica in Sand," and "The Sonic Blossom." Additionally, a newly commissioned piece titled "Chaque Souffle une Danse" (Each Breath a Dance) enriches the exhibition with its innovative contribution.

It is worth highlighting that the exhibition has garnered wholehearted support from notable contributors, including the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Contemporary Support Council, among others. Edward Yang Retrospective presented by American Cinematheque

Edward Yang (1947–2007) was born in Shanghai, China, and grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, where he would become one of the Taiwan New Cinema movement’s prominent figures, an acclaimed filmmaker garnering numerous accolades internationally.

Edward’s film expressions and approaches were audacious, experimental, and witty. Through the eyes of Edward Yang, the Taiwanese experience was revealed. Yang not only examined the modern experiences and living conditions of urban residents, using Taipei as a common setting for his works, but also succinctly captured specific eras of Taiwanese history and culture.

The retrospective includes the 4K restorations of A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION, MAHJONG, along with A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, TAIPEI STORY, IN OUR TIME and YI YI. "2024 Taiwan International Print Biennial" calling for entries!
2024 Taiwan International Print Biennial
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) has held the "Taiwan International Print Biennial" since 1983 to promote the art of printmaking and to foster international cultural exchange with the participation of talented artists around the world. The online application period for submissions will be accepting till February 5, 2024. This competition is open to individuals of all nationalities and ages, with no registration fee. Participants not only stand a chance to win significant cash prizes but also have the opportunities to see their works added to the collections of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
