My Favorite Season《最想念的季節》 (1985), directed by Chen Kun-hou, will be screened at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library as part of the Taiwan Cinema Toolkit by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI).

Adapted from a novel by Chu Tien-wen and co-written by Hou Hsiao-hsien, this urban romantic comedy follows an independent woman who, after becoming pregnant, seeks a man for a temporary marriage and meets the reserved Bao-liang. Their one-year arrangement gradually develops into an unexpected relationship. Set against 1980s Taipei, the film approaches unmarried pregnancy and relationships without moral judgment while highlighting female independence and self-determination.
Following the screening, a discussion will explore Chinese-language cinema and moviegoing culture in Southern California, with a focus on the Kuo Hwa Theater in the San Gabriel Valley and the Sing Lee Theater in Chinatown.

Chiao-Han Chueh’s On Shifting Ground at 18th Street Arts Center

On Shifting Ground brings together paintings by Chiao-Han Chueh, created during her three-month residency in Los Angeles, alongside works from Luciana Abait’s Iceberg Series. When the two artists met, their works appeared far apart in medium, process, and visual language. Yet through ongoing conversations, they began to recognize an unexpected affinity in the way both transform space through color. Chueh’s paintings slowly took shape during her residency. They reflect on relocation, time, and the traces left by lived experience, exploring how memory and trauma become inscribed in the body. Brushstrokes and layers accumulated, following the rhythm of daily life in the studio. The exhibition is held on August 12–23 at the Atrium Gallery of 18th Street Arts Center.
