The 2023 Hawaii International Film Festival's incredible lineup for "Spotlight on Taiwan" is unveiled.
Spotlight on Taiwan
The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, in partnership with the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), will present the "Spotlight on Taiwan" program, which will showcase five remarkable Taiwanese films.

Lineup highlights include Yu Sen-I’s "My Heavenly City", which is comprised of a three interrelated stories about life as immigrants in New York City ; Fu Tien-Yu’s  comedy drama "Day Off" by, which captures the intimacy of everyday interactions that shape the significance of our existence; the acclaimed art director Hwarng Wern-Ying's directorial debut “Be With Me”, a story about a woman's spiritual and emotional journey while stumbling in her love life, career and with her family; Bruce Chiu’s directorial debut "A Girl Out of the Country", in which a teenage girl dreams of becoming a star but ends up working as a hostess at a teahouse; and Chiang S. Leo’s short film, “Island in Between”, that explores the uncomfortable peace on Taiwan's outer Kinmen Island.

Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture launches Kuroshio Odyssey: Maritime Memories, Culture, and Landscapes
Maritime Memories, Culture, and Landscapes
The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles is collaborating with the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture for the first time to curate an exhibition with the theme of "Space and Ethnicity," presenting recent international attention-grabbing issues related to Taiwan's eastern marine landscapes and the diversity of indigenous cultures.

From October 14, 2023, to November 28, 2023, the exhibition will not only showcase the Burke Museum's nearly century-old collection of Taiwanese indigenous artifacts but also include dialogues with four Taiwanese indigenous representatives: Director Uki Bauki, Sra Kacaw, Dumai Manaaki, and Sayang Anang. The program includes activities such as film screenings of "Mutralun?與山" followed by discussions, an online scholarly forum, traditional Amis cuisine, reading group, and crafting workshop.

Partnered with the Taiwan Ministry of Culture, the Council of Indigenous Peoples, the Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation (GIOS) at Arizona State University are collaborating to extend a sincere invitation to you for an exciting event scheduled from October 18th to 21st, 2023. Many internationally recognized scholars and experts are invited to participate in this three-day in-person/hybrid symposium and a one-day tribal exploration visit, which will explore the close ties and significance of Taiwan and indigenous Austronesian peoples in the Pacific region.

2024 ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Open Call!
The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA) partners with the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) to launch the “Emerging Translator Mentorship: Literature from Taiwan” program.  The program will select one emerging translator who will receive mentoring from an experienced translator on a translation project. Online submissions for this program are being accepted until November 30, 2023, at 11:59pm PT.

Translators who have published no more than one full-length translated work are eligible to apply. The Ministry of Culture will provide support to the selected translator to work with the mentor for a nine-month period starting in February 2024. Steve Bradbury, an esteemed American translator with extensive experience in teaching modernist literature in Taiwan and translating the works of contemporary Chinese-language poets, will serve as the mentor. The selected translator will have the opportunity to participate in the ALTA annual conference in the fall of 2024, facilitating valuable networking connections with publishers. The 2023 Western Arts Alliance (WAA) Annual Conference took place from September 5th to September 8th at the Sheraton Grand Seattle. There were more than 6 hundred performing art professionals who have participated in dynamic forums, informative workshops, and networking opportunities together. The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles featured the Taiwan Exhibit themed “Taiwan On the Move” at Booth 203. 2024 WAA will be held in San Diego CA!
