In collaboration with the 18th Street Arts Center in Los Angeles, the Ministry of Culture will help Taiwanese resident artist Liao Chi-yu hold her first solo video exhibition in the United States.
The exhibition, which will run between Sept. 5 and Oct. 5 at the 18th Street Arts Center, will introduce to American audiences several avant-garde pieces, including Liao's "Picnic” video and her "Twinkle” series.
In the work "Picnic,” Liao evokes childhood memories and ideas related to the concept of a picnic, using stories about food to connect her personal history with the audience. Based on the scenario of a picnic as a site for dreaming and revisiting the past, Liao gives an impression of reality that seems to be rooted in the recollections of a previous time.
In her "Twinkle” series, a nine-piece single-channel video work, Liao presents a tableaux vivant through a series of video portraits of female characters. Each persona is situated at a dining table, offering to serve the viewer a diverse banquet of food and drinks.
Liao, who graduated from the Department of New Media Art of the Taipei National University of the Arts, is currently in a three-month residency program at the Santa Monica-based 18th Street Arts Center. She is one of 18Taiwanese artistssubsidized by the Ministry of Culture to participate in overseas art residency this year.
The artist had previously held six solo exhibitions in Taiwan and took part in international events such as Germany's Videonale Festival for Contemporary Video Art as well as the Kaunas Biennial in Lithuania.
