  • Date:2022-04-05

The 64th GRAMMY Awards, recognized as the most outstanding achievement in the music industry of the United States, took place in Las Vegas on April 3, 2022. Taiwanese Designers Jheng Han Li and Wei Yu of the album Pakelang won the GRAMMY Award for Best Recording Package! It was also the first time that Taiwanese designers won a GRAMMY Award! On behalf of Minister Yung-te Lee of the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan, and Director General Louis M. Huang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA), the Taiwan Academy of TECO-LA congratulated the winners.

The GRAMMY-awarded album Pakelang was the first collaboration between “2nd Generation Falangao Singing Group” and the band “The Chairman” who rearranged the Amis’ ancient ballads with elements of reggae, electronic and rock music. The designers Jheng Han Li and Wei Yu started out with the images of Taiwan’s east coast (location of Falangaw Tribe) by using paper cutouts to show the silhouettes of coastlines, mountain ranges and the Amis people singing. The design concept symbolizes that Taiwan is an ocean state and the aboriginal cultural heritage has been passed on continuously. Their work for their first nomination won the hearts of the judges.

In the award ceremony, Jheng Han Li and Wei Yu addressed the audience that “Taiwan is a beautiful and peace-loving country,” and warmly welcomed them to visit Taiwan someday. For more information, please visit: https://www.grammy.com/
