The Aleph Festival of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) focuses on the fusion of arts and science. With its theme “The Frontiers of the Environment” in 2022, Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles partners with National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) to present the programs “After sea-level rise, I…” and “Whisper of Trees” from May 19 to May 29, 2022.
“After sea-level rise, I…” is a short film piece created by artists including Weiwuying Artist-In-Residence Shu-yi Chou on the roof of the Weiwuying architecture. Chou, attempting to share his perspectives on the future of climate change and floods, states, “perhaps one day, this would become the refuge of life.” The program “Whisper of Trees” is the cross-collaboration between Young composer Hsuan-hung Chou and young film director Zhao-yi Wei. This creation research, supported by National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), focuses on trees and consists of the conducting of recording, filming, soundscaping, and music writing in Kaohsiung. Both programs indicate the coexistence relationship between human beings and nature.
UNAM is the largest public university and was ranked the best in Latin America. Founded in 2017, UNAM holds The Aleph Festival of Arts and Science in May. “The Aleph” refers to the story written by world-known Argentina writer Jorge Luis Borges. The in-person screening event of these two programs will take place at National Pavilion of Biodiversity (which just had its official opening in 2021) and the Julio Bracho cinema.
