With the cooperation between the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Taiwanese legendary artist Tehching Hsieh and Writer Yi-Chin Lo are invited to attend "Taiwan in Dialogue” Lecture Series on June 8 at 6 PM and June 10 at 4 PM (PT). The topics are “Lo Yi-Chin on Literary Creation” and “The Path of Performance: In Conversation with Tehching Hsieh.”

As one of the most acclaimed writers of contemporary Taiwan literature, Yi-Chin Lo is the author of The Western Xia Hotel, Kuang Chaoren, Daughter, Surname of the Moon, The Third Dancer, The Ming Dynasty, Cab Driver, and Us. He is the recipient of the Dream of the Red Chamber Prize (Hong Kong), Taiwan Literature Prize, and the Taipei Literary Prize. In 2021, Columbia University Press published Faraway (translated by Singapore novelist and translator Jeremy Tiang), Lo’s first novel to be translated into English.

Tehching Hsieh is a pioneer of Performance Art in Taiwan. In 1974, he jumped ship to a pier near Philadelphia. He was an illegal immigrant in the United States for fourteen years till an amnesty was granted in 1988. Starting in the late 1970s, Hsieh made five “One Year Performances” and a “Thirteen Year Plan” in his studio in New York City. His radical approaches to use long durations of time made Hsieh a regular name in contemporary art. The work One Year Performance 1980-1981 (Tate Modern’s permanent collection) was exhibited at MoMa and the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 2009. His recent exhibition Doing Time was presented by Taiwan Pavilion at the 57th Venice Art Biennale 2017.

The “Taiwan in Dialogue” Lecture Series is hosted by UCLA Professor Michael Berry. These two events will be held on Zoom while livestreaming on the YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/UCLAccs/featured. All are welcome to register online: https://www.international.ucla.edu/ccs/events
