The performing group from Taiwan “A Moving Sound”, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture (Taiwan), will perform on Oct 7th at SOKA Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles.
The co-founders of A Moving Sound are leading singer Mia Hsieh and composer Scott Prairie. Mia met Scott in New York during her Fulbright scholarship study and soon after they chose Taiwan to be the home for their creative work. Their music creatively combines traditional Taiwanese instruments and musical ideas with modern artistic concepts for a global audience. The music features the distinctive timbre of the Erhu (Taiwanese violin) and Zhong Ruan (lute), and the transcendent vocals of Mia Hsieh. A Moving Sound has devised a unique and compelling style that is all their own. The prestigious Melbourne International Arts Festival describes them as "a Taiwanese whirlwind that veers between the meditative and the exuberant with irrepressible spirit."
They have performed in 20 countries and have been featured on BBC Radio 3, National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered" in the U.S., and on The Discovery Channel. A Moving Sound has performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Chicago World Music Festival and the highly respected Grand Performances series in Los Angeles. They have performed and taught at many respected universities in the US and Europe including Dartmouth College, Vanderbilt University, George Washington University and many others.
National Geographic music critic Tom Pryor describes A Moving Sound as “one of the most original outfits working in the world music arena today.” CAL Arts Theater program director Lauren Pratt described A Moving Sound show as “an enthralling, engaging performance which seamlessly mixed timeless music from the heart of Taiwanese culture with a contemporary flair, evocatively beautiful, with a strong, resilient core.”
