Taiwanese indigenous culture will be highlighted in a special talk organized by the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles. Olivia Tsuyin Liou (羅楚瑩), former head of the Los Angeles Chinese Folk Dancers, will discuss Amis culture, festivals, and dance in the day-long program on April 11.
Liou, who comes from Hualien County in eastern Taiwan, will talk about the traditions of the Amis tribe, the largest indigenous group on the island, and demonstrate Amis dance routines she had learned while visiting aboriginal communities during her childhood. Four professional dancers will also join her in the live demonstration, and a photography display will be held on the sidelines as well.
Following the lecture, the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will serve refreshments and Taiwanese gourmet dishes prior to screening the 2009 documentary "Baseball Boys (野球孩子).” The Taiwanese film tells the story of an elementary school baseball team comprising mostly indigenous Amis boys and their efforts to enter the national finals.
The Taiwan Academy in LA will continue to host other lectures on Taiwan-related topics, including the island's fashion industry, music, dance, and crafts.
