Film Independent Launches Application for Taiwan Academy Fellowship, with application deadline extended to July 31st

Following “the Taiwan 2020 Residency in Los Angeles,” Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles of Ministry of Culture collaborates yet again with Film Independent to launch “Taiwan Academy Fellowship” as a grant to support a Taiwanese filmmaker(s) who is accepted into the Film Independent Producing Lab for their creative and logistic needs to develop their projects. Only one applicant (or one filmmaking team) will be awarded this fellowship. The awarded applicant will receive a stipend of 10,000 US dollars and will participate in the Producing Lab for a week in October. The application is now open until July 31st (before 11:59pm PDT, local time in Los Angeles, California, USA), 2020. All aspiring Taiwanese filmmakers are welcome to apply.

In the “Producing Lab,” professional filmmakers will be present to advise on the technological and financial perspectives in independent filmmaking, while an established creative advisor will provide one-on-one guidance on developing the proposed project. The lab will culminate with a one-day presentation, which will help gaining the proposed project’s visibility in the film industry, meanwhile creating a platform for the senior executives of the industry to share experiences and advice with the fellowship recipient.

Prospective applicants for the Producing Lab-Taiwan Academy Fellowship must be a Taiwanese filmmaker (or a filmmaking team) based in Taiwan with high language proficiency in English. Applicants are required to propose a feature-length narrative projects that are already in active development or pre-production with a completed script and director in place. If the awarded recipient is a filmmaking team with more than one filmmaker, the fellowship stipend will be equally distributed. Documentary, short film, new media, and episodic projects are not eligible to apply. Required application materials are as follows (all the materials have to be written in English):

• Photocopy of both sides of Taiwanese passport or ID document
• Taiwan Academy Fellowship Cover Letter (300 words maximum)
• Proposed project’s logline (65 words maximum) and synopsis (500 words maximum)
• A cover letter explaining your interest in the Producing Lab (500 words maximum)
• An artist statement detailing why you are attached to produce (500 words maximum)
• A statement that describes the current stage of the proposed project and its development history (300 words maximum)
• A financial plan (300 words maximum) and the budget top sheet
• Full-length feature screenplay
• Biographies of attached key cast and crew (for example: director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, and editor, etc); each biography is limited to 100 words
• Work sample and/or rough cut
• Lookbook (if applicable)

“Film Independent” is an American nonprofit organization located in Los Angeles. It is recognized for its top-end Artist Development Labs, which support filmmakers to develop projects strategy and its execution, while helping them establish their network in Hollywood in order to accelerate the completion of the project. This year marks the debut of the fellowship co-presented by Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles of Ministry of Culture and Film Independent. This fellowship program aims to provide resources for aspiring Taiwanese filmmakers to connect with the filmmaking capital, Los Angeles, to acquire further knowledge while expanding professional network. The mission of this program is expected to better assist and bridge Taiwanese film industry with international platform.
