The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA) collaborates with the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) to launch the program “Emerging Translator Mentorship.” In 2023, American translator Steve Bradbury will serve as a mentor to guide the translation of Taiwanese literary work. We welcome emerging Taiwanese translators to apply.
Founded in 1978, ALTA is an organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to literary translation. ALTA hosts the largest gathering of literary translations annually in the United States, which brings together about 500 attendees from all over the world and facilitates publications for translators. Since its inception in 2015, ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program was initiated to establish a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a translation project. The program has supported more than 16 language translators to join the ALTA annual conference.
The Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, starting the partnership with ALTA in 2022, will continue this program in 2023 and call for promising early career translators to translate Taiwan Literature. The submission window is open now till November 30, 2022. Translators who have published no more than one full-length translated work are eligible to apply. The Ministry of Culture will support the selected translator to work with the mentor for nine months and join the ALTA annual conference in the fall of 2023. Steve Bradbury, the mentor for 2023, is an American translator who taught Modernist literature in Taiwan for years and translates the work of contemporary Chinese-language poets. He was named winner of the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation for Taiwanese poet Amang’s Raised by Wolves: Poems and Conversations.
