The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will host a solo exhibition featuring contemporary installations by Taiwanese artist Hao Ni (倪灝) from Aug. 9 through Sept. 23.
Themed "Sleep Mode,” the exhibition will present mixed media installations, sculptures and videos, marking the artist's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.
In reference to the electronic technology that will turn on power-saving mode when a device is idle and resume full function upon awakening, "Sleep Mode” will explore the modern phenomenon of people who are in a perpetual state of restlessness and their relationship with an artificial environment.
The exhibition area will be divided into two sessions, with the first session displaying works that are reconstructed from everyday objects such as air filters, rice, and cigarettes to present the organic functions of the human body.
The second session will create an illusionary night scene with sculptures and raindrops. Artificial lights that attract bugs and cause their demise will also be installed to reflect the danger hidden in the contemporary technology-filled environment.
Born in Hsinchu City in northern Taiwan, Ni is based in New York after receiving a MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2014. His installation works explore the cyclical nature of human life and modernity by deconstructing and reconfiguring daily items.
Ni's previous exhibitions were held in Queen's Museum, Yellow Peril Gallery, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and New Bedford Art Museum. He was the recipient of the 2014 Taipei Arts Award in the merit category.
