Together Alone by Taiwanese artist Chen-Wei Lee and Hungarian-born, Belgium-based dancer and choreographer Vakulya Zoltán was invited by San Francisco International Arts Festival for its premiere in the U.S. There will be three performances presented at the Historic Firehouse of Fort Mason in San Francisco from May 24th to 26th, 2019. Besides, Chen-Wei Lee will lead a workshop “Gaga People Master Class” on May 23rd.
Together Alone is focused on the delicate relations between human beings and its transformation through time and space. Deprived of all external concealment and decorations, the two dancers Lee and Zoltán return to the primitive in dance and face each other with their most naked selves. In performing nude, they show the vulnerability of nudity; at the same time, sincerity and bravery are also revealed. In this intimate space and time, they communicate with each other and learn to move forward through compromises and cooperation. Their artistic view behind the piece is the idea of a solo in dancing together, which centers the individual loneliness with the power of being together.
Chen-Wei Lee is from Yilan, Taiwan and now based in Belgium. Started her career with Batsheva Dance Company in 2009, she has been a guest dancer at GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and VOETVOLK/Lisbeth Gruwez. Her debut at American Dance Festival with a work by Mark Dandy was described as “a sexpot soloist” by The New York Times. For her role in “Zelenstova” by Marcos Morau, Chen-Wei Lee’s performance and body ability were acclaimed “stunning and amazing’ by the Göteborges-Posten.
Premiered in 2016 at the National Theater of Taipei, Together Alone has been nominated in the Taishin Arts Award for Best Creation 2016, Total Theatre Award 2017 and Asian Arts Awards 2017. This piece has also been toured to many festivals and was one of the groups showcasing at the Taiwan Season - Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017. With the support of the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan, Together Alone will make their U.S. premiere at the San Francisco International Arts Festival this year and present itself to the U.S. audiences.
